Is there someone inside you?
Demonic possession is a concept deeply rooted in religious beliefs and folklore. It involves a malevolent entity taking control of a person's body, often resulting in terrifying and violent behavior. This idea has been used in horror movies to create a sense of fear and unease among viewers.
One of the most iconic horror movies featuring demonic possession is "The Exorcist" (1973). Directed by William Friedkin, this film tells the story of a young girl named Regan who becomes possessed by a demon. The movie's realistic portrayal of possession, combined with its intense and disturbing scenes, shocked audiences and set a new standard for the genre.
Since then, demonic possession has become a recurring theme in horror movies. Films like "The Conjuring" series, "Insidious," and "Annabelle" have all explored this concept, each adding their own unique twists and scares. These movies often rely on jump scares, eerie sound effects, and visual effects to create a sense of dread and terror.
10. Evil Dead II (1987)
No movie list is complete without at least one of the Evil Dead movies. The Evil Dead II is Sam Raimi's full throttle sequel to the original Evil Dead. Its as much of a remix as it is a sequel. The sequel follows Bruce Campbell as our favorite whacked-out demon slayer Ash Williams as he is forced to continue the battle against demonic forces at a remote cabin.
9. Sinister (2012)
Everyone knows I despise found footage movies. Luckily this is only about found footage. It follows Ethan Hawk as true crimes novelist Ellison Oswalt after uncovering films that depict brutal killings within the home his family occupies. Watch as he tries to keep his family safe while he puts the pieces of this gruesome puzzle together.
8. Insidious (2010)
Starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a family that tries to keep evil entities from trapping their comatose child in a realm called "The Further".
Directed by James Wan, he expertly delivers the scares you'd expect from this type of film.
7. The Conjuring (2013)
Another hit directed by James Wan and also starring Patrick Wilson. With The Conjuring, Wan created a possession film that hits harder than the rest. Loosely based on case files from Lorraine and Ed Warren this film follows the couple as they try to help a family terrorized by a dark spirit.
6. The Evil Dead (1981)
Starting out as a almost laughable low budget horror this movie gave rise to an epic trilogy. We see the beginning of Ash Williams played by Bruce Campbell as he and his friends battle demonic forces in a cabin deep in the woods. Released from their realm after they recite ritualistic lines from an ancient book "The Necronomicon"
5. The Witch (2015)
The film debut of Anya Taylor-Joy is better than most. Instead of a modern day possession story we get one set almost 400 years ago and characters speaking in old english. It follows a family dealing with a sinister force after being exiled from their community. Eggers creates an expertly crafted work of horror.
4. Hereditary (2018)
When the secretive matriarch of the Graham family dies, her daughters family find themselves haunted by the sinister fate they have inherited. Of the possession horror films made in the last 10-15 years, Hereditary stands out as a hit. Hauntingly great film all around.
3. Stigmata (1999)
After receiving a rosary that was apparently stolen, a young woman begins to manifest the wounds of christ, the Stigmata. Is it demonic possession or a touch of god? Obtaining a living gospel that may render the institution of the catholic church impotent, thats the premise of this film. I was going to make it #9 but i'm too lazy to go back and edit. Next..
2. The Offering (2022)
The son of a funeral director returns home with his pregnant wife in hopes of reconciling with his father. An ancient evil lurks within a mysterious corpse and has sinister plans for their unborn child. Will the mysterious entity destroy this family from the inside? Nick Blood and Emily Wiseman do this movie justice.
1 The Exorcist (1973)
When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter.
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made based loosely on actual events.
